Ember

Program Overview
The EMBER Program, (Experienced Mentors Bettering Emerging Researchers), was developed to add a stronger foundation to that of the college of science, engineering, and technology. The beauty of this program is that it focuses on a twofold moral purpose that all members will add to and benefit from. By using our talented and experienced CSET scholars, we will set up a program that teaches juniors and seniors how to become mentors. Mentors will first focus on working together to develop each other's capacity to mentor. Upon finishing training, they will be paired with CSET freshmen and sophomores and work with them as friends, not teachers. This unique experience will transform both the mentor and the mentee, and great triumphs are expected within the first year of this group's founding.
The Training Process

This was the first meeting with our potential mentors coming together, and being able to finally meet them has galvanized our spirits. With endless successes and accomplishments, these students will truly create a new legacy at JSU. We are hoping that they will be able to bring about change in a positive way.

Our second meeting with the other group of potential mentors really makes the program a reality. Students are devoting their time, because they have a passion to serve their campus in ways that they have deemed "necessary", "pivotal" and "inspiring.

The first day of training has begun, and mentors are enganged in an academic dialogue. While reflecting on quotes, or answering questions, mentors discuss with each other what it takes to be a mentor. Many new ideas were brought the forefront, and with continued conversations, mentors will continue to develop their capacity to serve those around them.

The mentors started off the meeting with an ice breaker to help get to know each other. After waking up and feeling more energized, the group tackled module two. All the mentors came prepared with their resumes and personal statements and discussed how they would provide feedback. The mentors left the meeting with another mentors resume and personal statement, and will practice what they have learned in the meeting to help give their peers feedback. Next week we plan to discuss how successful or challenging providing feedback was.
